Ganjifa: Traditional playing cards of India
(An exhibition)
Client: Sasha, Kolkata

Design and installation of exhibition on the Ganjifa, the traditional playing cards of India.

The exhibition showcases the research and collections of Vasudha Joshi, an IFA grant awardee based in Kolkata.

The exhibition invites audiences to contemplate the history and traditions of the playing cards, throwing light on the diverse styles, iconography and the imagery from different parts of India, while also focussing on the lives and attitudes of the card-makers.

I had to do supplemental research and documentation through photographs.

Bansari Foujdar, an artist, was present to demonstrate and teach participants how to make cards.
Shri Kishor Gordhandas, who has the largest collection of Ganjifa cards in the world, gave an introduction to the cards while displaying some from his collection.
